Local area
Nearby (3 km) is the fabulous Ballyliffin Golf Club. Ballyliffin (Baile Lifin) is a relaxed location justly proud of its beaches which attract many Northern Irish holidaymakers in the summer months. The village offers four great hotels for dining out and for those coming to play golf on the two championship 18-hole courses. A car ferry service operates nearby from Greencastle and guests can visit The Giants Causeway and Bushmill's Distillery, two of Northern Ireland's top attractions.
The nearby "Famine village" is a great attraction with shows running daily during the summer months. The village then turns into the spectacular Lapland during the Christmas period.
County Donegal's largest town, Letterkenney, is a 45 minute drive away and Northern Ireland's historic town of Derry is only a 35 minute drive away for good shopping.
County Donegal is a county of stark beauty, country roads, bare mountains, rugged sea cliffs, rocky peninsulars and the remote Gaeltacht communities. Reaching up to the island’s northernmost point, Donegal is Ireland’s second-largest county, severed from its traditional province when most of Ulster became Northern Ireland. It is cut off from the rest of the Republic by County Fermanagh.
The county has a number of key locations - the Donegal Bay area, the Glencolmcille and Dawros Bay peninsulas, the Rosses, the offshore islands, Gweedore, the northern headlands, Inishowen and the Laggan and Finn valleys are all worth some time to visit.
Arranmore Island is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts who visit throughout the year. The west of the island demonstrates the power of the Atlantic with many marine caves and stacks carved from solid rock resulting in a spectacular cliff coastline. Get the ferry out from Burtonport to one of the wilder places in Ireland, both for scenery and a cracking time. Highly regarded lake and shore fishing and walking can be combined with a lively pub scene in the evenings.
The rocky Gaeltacht area between Dungloe and Crolly, known as the Rosses (Na Rossa), enjoys a coastline of clean, sandy beaches. Further northwest, between Bunbeg and Dunfanaghy, the scenery is softer - the epitome of unspoilt Ireland.
