Castle Cottage sits on the Renvyle Peninsular on the west coast of Connemara, north of Letterfrack, which is located on the N59 between Clifden and Westport. The coast is just 100 metres away and at high tide guests can swim off the rocks in a cove just in front of the cottage. At other times safe bathing and sandy beaches are a few minutes drive away - the White Strand, Tully harbour and, a little further on, at Lettergesh. Its nearest villages are Tully (5 km), Tully Cross (6 km) and Letterfrack (11 km) while the closest town is Clifden 24 km away, with Westport (51 km) and Galway (90 km). For horse riding enthusiasts Connemara ponies can be hired locally, as can bicycles. The surrounding area is also particularly good for walking and bird watching. For entertainment there are regular musical performances by local musicians and dancers at the Teach Ceoil in Tully, with Tegolin's Tales Theatre Company performing Celtic Fairy Tales for children and the family, using specially designed masks, at 7.00pm every Thursday during July and August. More family entertainment - drama, music and dancing - takes place at Paddy Coynes’ bar in Tully Cross. Most pubs in Tully, Tully Cross and Letterfrack offer pub lunches and sandwiches during the day. In addition there are several hotels and restaurants within an 11km radius, and further afield at Leenane and Clifden. The Connemara National Park, Letterfrack, arranges special supervised children's activities, nature trails, hill and mountain walks and has a Visitor Centre. Other local activities include boat trips to Inishturk island - which is visible from the living-room window - and Inishboffin island. Fishing, scuba diving and golf are all available in the neighbourhood. Kylemore Abbey, Avoca craft shop and the gallery of the local artist E M Audigier are all worth a visit. The Killary Centre, at Leenane, is the local adventure centre. |
